Chapter Eight

It was the longest, hardest, most painful thirty-six hours of his existence. Sometime after midnight, Kennedy’s breathing had finally eased, but he was so pale and motionless that Julius was barely battling back his emotions.

The metaphysical connection he had with his mate was still there, but it was faint, weak, and only came in short pulses. The damnedest part of the entire situation was that Kennedy had saved his life, and there had been nothing Julius could do to return the favor.

He’d be laying in the bed next to his mate if not for the blood bond Kennedy had made with Jael. Though he’d taken his sweet time about it, the elf had come through in the end, taking Mason and Jenna down with a proficiency that opened up all kinds of new questions about his lineage. Julius was fast, but Jael moved like smoke on the wind.

They’d transferred Kennedy to one of the largest rooms in the abandoned hospital, which turned out to be a maternity suite. Then Jacob—healed from his own gunshot to the hip—Drakon, and Jael had barricaded the door. Now they took turns sleeping, guarding the prisoners, or watching out the second-floor window for signs of attack.

With Mason unconscious, the townspeople had retreated back into the shadows, but Drakon had been able to detain the werewolf and his mate. Bound and gagged, they slumped together in the corner of the room. Each time one of them began to rouse, Drakon would knock them out with another sleep spell. Laylan had offered to bang their heads together until they passed out, but apparently, that was frowned upon.

What the hell was this place? It definitely wasn’t the utopia they’d been hoping for, nor was it a Harbinger camp. He wouldn’t compare it to a city like the one they’d left behind, but it was a town for all intents and purposes.

“How long did you live here?”

Jael didn’t turn away from the window, but Julius saw the muscles in his back tighten, and there was a slight movement of his head as though he’d flinched. “I moved here three years ago.”

“What happened to this place?” Julius knew part of the story. It was the same thing that had happened all over the world. The human inhabitants had fallen victim to the virus, but what about the supes? Why had they let the place go to ruins? “What happened to these people, Jael?”

“Nothing happened.” The elf chuckled darkly and shook his head. “Well, I’m the obvious exception, but I was the only paranormal living here at the time. The humans who survived the virus moved on, and that’s when the others starting showing up.”

“Where did they come from? You heard those sounds coming from the middle of town. What the hell was that? That’s not normal. They sound…feral.”

Stepping back from the window, Jael finally turned to face him with an unreadable expression. “They are.”

“My mate almost fucking died,” Julius retorted angrily. “He might still. Quit the cryptic crap and give me some real answers.
